Our Breath is powerful. It is an integral part of our physiology, and as humans we don't have to think to breathe. However, the ancient yogis believed that when one was able to gain better control of the breath, we could then begin to make the important connection between mind and body. This one day workshop is and introduction into the greater understanding of pranayama; life energy in the form of breath. We'll delve into the anatomy and physiology of the breath. We'll also take a deeper look at the East-West perspective on pranayama and gain a more complete understanding of how to use and teach pranayama, or breath techniques in a class or studio setting, as well as one-on-one. A review of current and relevant studies will be included, along with the integration of using pranayama into an asana practice will be taught to help use the breath for changing our physiology as well as our state of mind.

Physiology and anatomy of breath – Anatomy and physiology of the breath from a Western and Eastern perspective—combination of discussion of physiology and the understanding of the nadis and the subtle body. Western biomedicine is now recognizing the power of the breath in disease processes and facilitating the healing process and promoting well-being.

Medical benefits – using the breath for stress reduction, reducing anxiety, decreasing asthma, complementary therapies for depression and other situations.  Review of current, relevant research studies including the effect of the breath on reducing blood pressure and other physiological situations.
